Subdomains are extra information added to the beginning of a domain name, otherwise known as a separate subdomain of the main domain.


The essence of these subdomains is to ensure that your website is well-organized and easy to navigate.

For example, in a domain name, you get the top-level domain, the additional word at the end of the domain name, and the second-level domain, which is the brand name itself. 

Given that we have, “.com” is the top-level domain, “Facebook” is the second-level domain, and “www” is the subdomain.

What Are Subdirectories?

Subdirectories are sub-folders that help divide the website into sections for easy navigation by visitors.

With a subdirectory URL, you could go on to have sub-folders within sub-folders and so on. However, this isn’t necessarily the best choice to make.

Even search engine crawlers may face a challenge trying to crawl your main site for new content and take note of other SEO modifications you may have done on it.

When comparing subdomains with subdirectories for SEO, it is important to realize that these tools are quite competent in their own right; one isn’t inherently better.

In the video above, John Mueller, a Google Webmasters Trend Analyst, stated that Google was fine with using either subdomains or subdirectories for search engine optimization. He also said that Google crawls subdomains separately but as a formality for a few days.


However, despite this statement, many SEO experts believe that subdomains are ineffective, considering that they do not share the authority they receive from inbound links (or backlinks) with the root domain.

This is probably true when you discover that subdomains are considered separate entities from the root domain, hence why they do not partake in any link authority relating to the content on your website.

  • Subdirectories prioritize the link equity in your domain. Link equity is one of the attributing factors to SEO, where the values and authority associated with the link(s) transfer from one website to another.
    If you have quality content with quality links from high-ranking sites, Google will consider your website top-notch and increase your domain authority.
  • Subdirectories can also be used for categorizing websites into different sections. This is usually done by large multinational corporations and businesses that run very large websites.

For example, blogs are believed to be better when placed in a subdirectory, with most blogs on the internet taking this approach. However, for landing pages, it can be quite tricky to know which one to go for.


If you know you do not have any content that would add value to your website, do not just jump into using subdirectories because most people prefer it.
